The Young Banker Development Programme

Over the course of this two-year programme, you will gain valuable insight and have the chance to develop with a leading global bank. The programme provides opportunities to learn to gain a global perspective and, on completion, hopefully progress quickly into your first leadership role.

Prepare for your future

Over the two-year programme, you will be developed as one of our future leaders. You will explore in depth the banking business within a chosen career stream such as: Retail Banking and Wealth Management, Commercial Banking, Global Functions or HSBC Technology and Services (The final intake numbers will be decided upon business needs every year). You will be able to decide which career stream is right for you, with your choice confirmed at the final selection stage.

What to expect

You will start with a comprehensive introduction to HSBC’s organisation and operations, where you will see the workings of a major global bank. Through a combination of formal and on-the-job training, you’ll develop strategic and leadership skills. Throughout the programme, you will also benefit from:

  • Job postings in different departments within your chosen stream to broaden your experience
  • The opportunity to gain overseas experience through the Regional Graduate Development Programme or an overseas attachment. These provide a platform to expand your key networks and gain exposure to best practices across regions.

  • Can graduates of non-business related disciplines apply for the Young Banker Development Programme?
    We welcome graduates of non-business related disciplines to apply for this Programme, all applications will be reviewed by an identical standard.
  • What if I am still abroad for school?
    If you are graduating this year, we will contact you once your application passes the first screening stage. If you are graduating next year, we suggest you to apply for the Programme next year.
  • How many selection stages are there in the Young Banker Development Programme?
    Please refer to the selection process table above.
  • How many management trainees are you planning on recruiting this year?
    We are planning on recruiting 15-20 Young Bankers this year. However, we may go above or fall below that number depending on the performance of the applicants.
  • I have submitted my application form, how long will it takes to hear from you?
    You will receive a confirmation e-mail in one to three weeks after you submit your application. Those who passed the résumé screening will receive an additional e-mail regarding the Aptitude Test.
  • Is there a campus event this year?

  • Where can I find more information about the Young Banker Development Programme?

  • What is the selection process of Young Banker Express and how does it differ from the regular selection process?
    Only the time frame of the selection process is different from regular selection process. Submit your application by 5 January 2015, and you will have the opportunity to complete the selection process and become an HSBC Young Banker by February.

Aptitude Test

  • What does the Aptitude Test cover?
    The Test contains numerical and verbal reasoning questions. The Test will be given in English.
  • Do I take the Aptitude Test on site or online?
    Aptitude Test will be distributed online. Those who passed the résumé screening will receive an e-mail with more details regarding the Aptitude Test.
  • Does the Aptitude Test cover any professional field or financial knowledge? Do I need to prepare for it?
    The Aptitude Test contains only numerical and verbal reasoning questions, professional knowledge will not be covered; therefore, no preparation is necessary.
  • How do I know the result of the Aptitude Test?
    You will receive an e-mail in one to three weeks after you complete the Aptitude Test. Those who pass the Aptitude Test will receive a phone call regarding the interview schedule.
