HSBC's presence in Taiwan dates back to 1885 when The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited appointed an agent. A full-service branch was established in Taipei in 1984. In 2007, HSBC acquired one of Taiwan’s leading factoring companies, Chailease Credit Services, and opened a new life insurance company. In March 2008, HSBC acquired the business and operations of The Chinese Bank in Taiwan. In 2009, HSBC obtained approval to set up a local subsidiary in Taiwan - HSBC Bank (Taiwan) Limited, and began operating through the locally incorporated entity in May 2010 with headquarters in Taipei.
Taiwan plays a key role in HSBC’s Greater China platform and is one of HSBC’s key growth markets in Asia. Our current network comprises 26 outlets. We have branches in all the major cities in Taiwan, including Greater Taipei area, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Taichung, Tainan, and Kaohsiung.
As one of the largest global banks, HSBC is responsible for taking the lead in adopting a strong and integrated strategy and becoming a net-zero bank. HSBC (Taiwan) follows the principle of sustainable development and integrates ESG into our financial products and services to encourage low carbon transformation of businesses. Currently, HSBC (Taiwan) has launched various ESG products, including green bonds, green loans, green trade loans, sustainability-linked loans, and HSBC Global Lower Carbon Bond fund and Global Equity Climate Change Fund. The purpose is to utilize our professional knowledge and capabilities to help our clients as well as the society to achieve the zero carbon target.
HSBC has been supporting environmental and educational causes for a long time and providing donations to help combat Covid-19. In 2022, the Bank donated over NT$28.1 million to major charity organisations, focusing on children’s education, skill development for the disadvantaged, environmental protection, and sustainable finance. The recipients include Guandu Nature Park, Boyo Social Welfare Foundation, Eden Social Welfare Foundation, Garden of Hope Social Welfare Foundation, Program the World Association, Business Council for Sustainable Development of the Republic of China, World Vision, Mennonite Social Welfare Foundation and so on. In addition, the Bank also organized a stationary supplies donation for children from underprivileged families and remote areas and the value of the stationery supplies from our employees exceeded NT$350,000. In addition, HSBC Taiwan continues to encourage staff volunteer activities as part of its commitment to the community, which has resulted in thousands of volunteer hours throughout the years.
